The Best Leadership Training I Ever Got? Working for Terrible Bosses.
Funny thing… some of the most valuable leadership lessons I ever learned didn’t come from a seminar, a business book, or some motivational speaker on a stage with a headset microphone. They came from working for absolute disasters.
The kind of bosses who could suck the oxygen out of a room just by walking in.
The ones who thought fear was leadership.
Who confused being intimidating with being respected.
Who believed criticism motivated people.
Who thought public humiliation built character.
Who treated their teams like replaceable parts instead of valuable team members.
And honestly? As miserable as some of those experiences were… I’m weirdly grateful for them. Because every single day working for people like that taught me exactly one thing:
DO THE OPPOSITE!
My gut would kick in almost immediately:
“This guy’s nuts.”
And that little internal voice became one of the best leadership coaches I ever had.
If he tore someone down in front of the team…
I learned to praise in public and coach in private. If he led through fear…
I learned people do their best work when they feel safe.If he nitpicked every mistake…
I learned that confidence grows when people are trusted.
If he walked around negative, cynical, and impossible to please…
I learned attitude isn’t “soft stuff”—it’s culture.
If he belittled and smashed someone’s career dreams.
I made a point of taking an interest in their career development.
And culture becomes performance.
Bad bosses don’t just create bad days.
They create toxic workplaces.
Places where people stop speaking up.
Stop taking risks.
Stop caring.
Stop bringing ideas.
Eventually… they stop bringing their best selves altogether.
And when that happens, it’s not because people are lazy. It’s because someone spent months—or years—convincing them their effort didn’t matter.
I’ve worked for bosses who probably made half their staff fantasize about owning a voodoo doll with their face on it.
Funny… but also kind of tragic.
Because leadership isn’t supposed to make people feel small. It’s supposed to make people feel capable.
Seen.
Trusted.
Challenged.
Valued.
That’s what real leaders do.
And one day, when I found myself leading people of my own, I made myself one simple promise: I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror when I get home.
Not because I hit the numbers.
Not because I impressed my boss.
Not because I squeezed another ounce of productivity out of people.
But because I treated people right, the way I had wanted to be treated. Because people remember that.
It’s said often, but it’s true. People don’t leave bad jobs; they leave bad managers. Long after they forget the targets, the meetings, the quarterly goals, or the spreadsheets, they remember how you made them feel.
So weirdly enough…
To every terrible boss I ever had—
Thanks. You taught me exactly who I never wanted to become.
So, Why Does This Matter to Me Today?
Because years later, that “bad boss training” didn’t just shape how I lead, it shaped why I built HR Talent Alliance.
At HR Talent Alliance, we don’t just help companies fill jobs. Anybody can throw résumés at a hiring manager.
We help organizations hire leaders… not ego-driven managers. We help companies build cultures where people actually want to stay, contribute, grow, and do the best work of their careers.
And on the coaching side, we help professionals navigate toxic workplaces, difficult managers, career crossroads, and leadership challenges—because many of us have lived it ourselves.
The truth?
A bad hire in leadership doesn’t just hurt productivity.
It hurts people.
It hurts culture.
It hurts retention.
It hurts the employer brand.
And eventually… it hurts the business.
That’s why at HR Talent Alliance, we’re obsessed with one thing:
Putting the right people in the right seats… and helping leaders become the kind of people others actually want to follow.
Because after working for enough terrible bosses…
You stop recruiting for résumés.
You start recruiting for character.
